What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is a science which works on the seven chakras,
the arcline and the aura (the Eighth Chakra). It works directly on the total energy, and that flow of energy has one simple way: either you sway it or it sways you. Either you are above the energy and ride
it, or you go below the energy and it rides you. That is where Kundalini Yoga fits in: you will learn to ride your energy, to
experience it and penetrate any given situation to attain a balance.
What is kundalini actually? It is your creative potential. You experience it when the energy of the glandular system combines with the energy of the nervous system to create such a sensitivity that the totality of the brain receives signals and integrates them. Them you become totally and wholly aware, and your creative potential becomes available to you.
The power of Kundalini Yoga lies in the actual experience. It goes right into you heart and extends your consciousness so you may have a wider horizon of grace and of knowing the truth. Ultimately, you come to understand your existence in relationship to the universe and understand you already are, and this brings to you the practical experience of Infinity. You can then radiate creativity and Infinity in all aspects of your daily life. - Yogi Bhajan
The Kundalini Yoga Class
A Kundalini yoga class is generally structured with a beginning chant to tune in, then a kriya (a set of breathing and moving exercises designed to open/cleanse/integrate primary systems within the body, i.e. cleansing the kidneys,
stimulating one or more glands, bringing energy to the spine,
stimulating digestion, etc.), a deep relaxation, meditiation (6 to 31
minutes, which includes breath, visualization, and mudras), and a
final closing chant.
In general, much of the class is done with the
students eyes closed. Because the Kriyas, and some instances the
Meditations, have been perfected centuries ago, they are set and are
not modified when taught. My own personal experience has been that
these yoga sets appropriately challenge both advanced as well as
beginning yoga students. The yoga set will meet you with whatever
ability you come to the class. Kundalini Yoga is self initiating.
The Kundalini Yoga teacher primarily holds the space for the students
to open to their own experience. As a Kundalini Yoga teacher I will
suggest ways to help with body alignment, breath quality, rhythm of
movement, etc., but it is the student's responsibility to connect with
the teachings on a personal, individual level.
